I just ran into this band a few days ago so I don’t claim to be very knowledgeable about the band at all.  I watched a few of their music videos on Youtube and immediately liked their style.  So I did a little research and found that I am extremely late to the party.  This band has been around for a while. Apparently their music has also been featured on TV and various movies.  The movies include Silver Linings Playbook, 12 Years a Slave, A Long Way Down.  Their music was also featured this year on SNL and Silicon Valley.  Other notable things about this band I knew nothing about until a few days ago…They have been nominated for a few Grammys.  They happened to win Emerging Artist of the Year from the Americana Music Honors.

As everyone knows, soundtracks have some of the best music and as soon as I heard this band I immediately understood why they had been included in so many popular soundtracks. This band is legit.  They have that old southern rock sound combined with the throwback vocals of lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard.  A lot of people on the internet have been saying that she harks back to the vocals of Janis Joplin and many of the old Muscle Shoals artists from back in the day but to my ear she draws direct similarities to a lesser known singer; Alice Smith.  She never reached critical acclaim or any sort of real notoriety but she is or was a fantastic artist with her own unique sound in that more soulful tradition between rock and soul.

Their debut album was released back in 2012 “Boys and Girls”.  This newer album was released in April of this year.  I’ve listened to both albums and I can promise you there is no sophomore slump for with this group.  Granted it’s kind of ridiculous to say a band that has been around since 2009 is now in a sophomore position in its music.
